Our latest order is on the pallet and heading out the door: 21 STM worm geardrives, each fitted with a torque limiter and an output flange, for an automation engineer building fruit handling machines for packhouses in the USA and New Zealand.
They’ll drive the small reject fruit conveyors on those machines, the conveyors that carry fruit that doesn’t make the grade away from the main packing line.
Reject conveyors don’t get much attention until one stops. Then fruit backs up, someone has to clear it by hand and the main line can slow down with it. Here’s what went into these drives to keep that from happening.
A torque limiter on every unit
A reject conveyor takes whatever the line sends it, so jams happen. If something wedges and the conveyor stalls, the motor keeps pushing, and that load has to go somewhere. Without protection it can end up in the gearbox, the motor or the conveyor itself.
A torque limiter is the weak link on purpose. When the load goes past its set point it slips instead of passing the force through, so the jam gets cleared and the drive carries on. It’s a small part that turns a jam into a quick clear-out instead of a breakdown.

An output flange for a clean mount
STM’s RMI round worm gearboxes take a modular output flange, which gives a solid mounting face to bolt the gearbox straight onto the conveyor. It keeps the drive properly supported and makes fitting simpler on site.
The same spec across the whole set
All 21 units are the same, which pays off long after install. Every conveyor runs and is maintained the same way, and one spare on the shelf covers the whole set.
Each geardrive also carries a label with its model, ratio and part code. The unit pictured is an RMI 28 at 100:1. If one ever needs replacing, those details make it quick to match the right unit.

About STM RMI gearboxes
The RMI series are round worm gearboxes made from die-cast aluminium, in sizes 28 to 180, ratios from 7:1 to 100:1 and hollow shafts from 14mm to 65mm. EQM supplies STM gearboxes New Zealand-wide. View the STM range.
